About Me

This is me

Hi, my name is Joris Kalk and I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Creative Media & Game Technologies. My interest in game development started because of my passion for playing games. This led to me creating a small game as a project for middle school and also led to me choosing my current studies.

Skills and Expertise

I am proficient with the following software and tools:

  • Unity
  • Visual Studio
  • Programming languages: C#, C++
  • Version control: Git

Projects

I have gained experience through projects from middle school and my current studies, these include:

  • 2D platformer
  • 3D monster photography

Mission

My mission is to make games that others can enjoy. But besides that I also want to create projects that can teach the player something. Serious Games is a concept that has caught my interest lately, because it shows the potential that games have to not only help us relax and escape from reality, but also to teach us valuable lessons or help us with the problems we struggle with on a daily basis. I hope that the projects that I work on will be able to change someone’s life for the better, even if just a little.

Personal interests

Besides my studies, I have a few hobbies and interests:

  • Watching anime: anime has helped me find an outlet for emotions that I sometimes bottle up and is a great way for me to relax my mind.
  • Reading manga: I have always loved reading, and manga is what I currently read most.

In the past I have also had a few interests and hobbies that I don’t do much with anymore, but that still affect the way I think:

  • Teaching chess: I taught chess to a group of young children for half a year. Because of this experience, I have a lot of respect for teachers, as it has shown me how difficult it can be to teach even just a small group. Because of this I consider the effort that people put into something a lot more, instead of mindlessly judging someone’s mistakes.
  • Online roleplaying through text: Creating a character and deciding what they do and feel has taught me a lot about my own emotions and also helped me empathize with others.
